Mascha has the darkest fur of all bears here at the Müritz BEAR PARK. She was born in 1994 and came to us, together with Otto in December 2006. Like Otto, she was given her name by the readers of the local daily paper here in the Mueritz region. The Nordkurier held a competition to choose names for the bears and the winning names stem from the Russian fable of "Mascha and the bear".

Mascha likes to take a bath, especially in spring during the mating season you can see her playing in the water with Otto.

Prior to coming to us here at the BEAR SANCTUARY Müritz, Otto and Mascha were privately owned in eastern Germany. For many years their world consisted of an enclosure measuring 150 square meters, surrounded by mesh fencing and concrete floors. Altogether too small and dismal to allow for any kind of balanced life for a bear. In the last few years at their old home, Mascha and Otto were separated, as they had already bred.
