The Sanctuary

Since 2006, the BEAR SANCTUARY Müritz has provided mistreated and neglected bears with a safe and natural home.  At the time of writing, 16 brown bears live in the open air enclosure, which covers an area of some 16 hectares.

Visitors to the sanctuary can take a walk through the park, experience the bears in their natural environment and learn more about these most fascinating of wild animals at the many and varied interactive information points.

What the bears find here is a habitat which repects and caters for their natural requirements. A varied landscape with mixed woodland, grasslands, forest glades, hillsides and a natural water course. These are the best possible conditions for brown bears to rediscover their true and instinctive characteristics; to live as nature intended.
